Ceramics

Beginning ceramics during the pandemic has been a transformative experience, serving as both a creative outlet and a source of valuable life lessons. As someone who used to work extensively with their hands, rediscovering this tactile engagement has been immensely fulfilling. Through pottery, I’ve not only reconnected with the joy of creating but also unearthed profound insights about resilience, patience, and the rewards of challenging oneself.

Clay doesn’t conform to rushed expectations; it demands a deliberate pace and a willingness to embrace imperfections. Similarly, in life, rushing through challenges often leads to mistakes or missed opportunities. Pottery has taught me to slow down, to appreciate the process as much as the outcome, and to find beauty in the journey of learning and growth.

Moreover, pottery has underscored the importance of resilience in the face of setbacks. Countless times, I’ve encountered failures – collapsed forms, cracked vessels, or glaze mishaps. Yet, each setback has been an opportunity to learn, adapt, and persevere. These experiences mirror life’s adversities, reminding me that setbacks are not indicators of failure but rather stepping stones to eventual success. Just as a misshapen clay pot can be reworked into something beautiful, so too can life’s challenges be transformed into opportunities for growth and resilience.

Challenging oneself in pottery has also reinforced the value of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Every time I try a new pottery technique or tackle a more complex project, I confront feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. Yet, with each challenge accepted and overcome, I gain confidence and a renewed sense of capability. This mirrors the broader significance of challenging oneself in life – it fosters personal development, expands horizons, and cultivates a sense of empowerment.

In essence, beginning ceramics during the pandemic has been more than just a hobby; it’s been a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Through pottery, I’ve learned the importance of patience, resilience, and challenging oneself – lessons that extend far beyond the confines of the studio and into the fabric of everyday life.

Painting

Exploring painting as a creative outlet has been both humbling and exhilarating. With each brushstroke, I’ve discovered not only the intricacies of colour and composition but also the value of embracing mistakes with a sense of humour. Following Bob Ross tutorials and other YouTube guides has become a delightful adventure, filled with equal parts laughter and awe at the unexpected beauty that emerges from experimentation. Painting in a group, each following the same tutorial, has shown me the fascinating diversity of interpretations and techniques, highlighting the individuality of artistic expression. This journey into painting has reinforced the idea that creativity knows no bounds and that the shared experience of learning something new can be as enriching as the final masterpiece itself.
